Snakes are some of the most fascinating creatures in all of nature. Some of them are dangerous and some of them are downright friendly. A few make for great pets, and some of them are the stuff of nightmares. Of course, the scariest ones are typically the largest. These are the kinds of sneaky scalies who can poison you, squeeze you to death, or (scariest of all) swallow you whole.

If you’re already scared of snakes, then you might want to sit down for this next part. You see, the world’s largest snake is much, much bigger than you might imagine. Furthermore, this snake was found where everyone least suspected it, reminding all of us that we could encounter Mother Nature’s creepiest critters just about anywhere. Where was this snake found? How big is he, and is he dangerous? Keep reading to find out!

Shocking discovery of the longest snake in the world

How do we know who the world’s longest snake is? Because she’s in the Guinness Book of World Records, of course! In late 2025, a snake in southwest Indonesia ended up wowing everybody with its massive length. The reticulated python, Ibu Baron (which translates to the Baroness) was measured, head to tail, at a whopping 23 feet and eight inches. That makes her officially the longest snake in the world, beating out the previous record holder (another reticulated python) by a good 10 inches.

In some ways, measuring the Baroness was an adventure unto itself. A team led by three men (a conservationist, a snake handler, and a photographer) raced to record the snake’s massive length as soon as they learned of its existence. Why the need for speed, though? Simple: local residents have a tendency to kill reticulated pythons as soon as possible because these sizeable snakes are a threat to both humans and livestock. Fortunately, the team was able to find and measure this reticulated python before anything could happen to it.

Is the world’s longest snake secretly longer?

Obviously, the Baroness is a lengthy snake. The longest in the world, in fact! But would you believe that she might secretly be even longer than was recorded? It all has to do with when her length was recorded. She was awake for the process and not under any kind of sedation, which made things that much more difficult for the experts measuring her. Ironically, though, this also made it difficult to accurately record the snake’s full length.

Why is that? Believe it or not, reticulated pythons are longer when they are sedated…about ten percent longer. What does that mean for the Baroness, then? It means that this 23-foot snake might actually be closer to 26 feet long. However, it’s dangerous to sedate a snake, and nobody involved wanted to put the Baroness in danger by putting her under. Unfortunately, that means we may never know exactly how long this record-breaking snake really is!

A real “heavy” weight

Obviously, we have been focusing on how long the Baroness is. After all, her prodigious length is what landed this slinky, slithering gal in the Guinness Book of World Records. However, she has another fine quality that nature lovers may find just as impressive, and that’s her weight. Simply put, she’s one of the heaviest snakes in the natural world!

When they weighed the Baroness, she clocked in at a hefty 213 pounds. If you need a visual, that means that the snake is about as heavy as a mature panda! Like her length, this reticulated python’s weight may change depending on when she was weighed. At the time, she hadn’t eaten any prey, so it was a bit like measuring her weight after she had been fasting. Had the Baroness been measured after she had grabbed herself a meal, she would have been even heavier. And measuring her after a meal might make the experts nervously ask the obvious question: just how dangerous is this snake?

How dangerous is this snake?

As we said before, most people think large snakes are dangerous. That’s not always the case…as with garden snakes, there are a few larger critters that aren’t really all that dangerous to human life. However, the Baroness is not one of them. The good news is that she isn’t venomous, so you don’t have to worry about getting poisoned by her massive fangs. The bad news is that she has a much more direct way to kill you!

Like all reticulated pythons, the Baroness has insanely strong muscles. When she gets hungry, she coils tightly around her prey, cutting off the flow of air. Once the prey is properly helpless, she eats it. While these snakes primarily eat other animals, they have been known to attack humans, which is why the experts who measured her were worried that she might be killed by the locals before they arrived.

Fortunately, all’s well that ends well with the Baroness. She now lives with one of the wildlife conservationists who measured her. That means she gets all the food she wants, and none of the locals have to worry about becoming her next meal!
